Fire-resistant compounds

At Bekina® Compounds, fire-resistant compounds are developed with an emphasis on safety and environmental friendliness. All our compounds are based on halogen-free flame retardants such as ATHs (aluminium trihydroxides), which help reduce smoke development and minimise harmful by-products during combustion. Moreover, they do not contain heavy metals. Depending on the requirements, loading levels of up to 80% may be needed to achieve the desired level of flame retardancy. With internal mixers, such high filling levels are achievable without compromising processability or the quality of the final product. 

These compounds are used primarily in infrastructure (buildings, data centres, rail, telecom) and in oil and gas (on drilling platforms to protect pipelines from so-called jet fires), but also in shipping, the (process) industry, energy and automotive. It can also be adapted to fire safety standards such as UL94, EN 45545-2 and others, depending on customer requirements and application.

EPDM

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer

  • Properties: Halogen-free, excellent weather and ozone resistance, very good compression set
  • Fire resistance: Good to very good (with additives such as ATH)
  • Typical applications: Railways, cable sheaths and seals

VMQ

Silicone Rubber

  • Properties: Inherent flame retardancy, low smoke emission, high temperature resistance
  • Fire resistance: Very high (UL94 V-0 achievable)
  • Typical applications: Electrical insulation, medical applications and seals

EVA

Ethylene Vinyl Acetate

  • Properties: Lightweight, flexible, easy to work with, halogen-free
  • Fire resistance: Moderate (requires strong compounding)
  • Typical applications: Cable sheaths and insulation

FKM

Fluorelastomer

  • Properties: Excellent heat and chemical resistance, low flammability
  • Fire resistance: High
  • Typical applications: Seals in extreme environments

NBR

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber

  • Properties: Good oil and fuel resistance, additives required for flame retardancy
  • Fire resistance: Moderate to good (with additives)
  • Typical applications: Hoses, gaskets and industrial applications
